It has now been nearly four years since the FDA approval of silicone breast implants for cosmetic breast augmentation. After more than ten years of controversy and scientific studies, the United States Food and Drug Administration(FDA) have approved silicone gel breast implants for general use. They are now available to all women ages 22 and higher for both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery.

In many situations, silicone implants have real advantages over saline breast implants. Some women might simply prefer not to have silicone implants for personal reasons as well as the cost for silicone is more expensive. Silicone implants have not been shown to cause autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus as had been feared.

Eat your veggies. A proper diet of fruits and vegetables or a vitamin supplement can help your body find the nutrients necessary for healthy skin throughout the winter months. Make sure you get enough of vitamins B, D, E, Magnesium and Zinc.

Keep your feet warm. Wet socks and gloves trap water against your skin and can leech the moisture out of it. When you come in from outdoor play, make sure to put on dry clothes immediately. Adding an application of lotion underneath will help replace the moisture before you miss it.

Don't lick your lips. While this may seem like a strange recommendation, the same is true about saliva as water trapped against your skin. Licking your lips actually pulls the moisture out of your skin, drying out and chapping your lips, leading to cracking and flaking skin. Instead, invest in a lip balm with jojoba butter or shea butter and a high SPF rating, and apply it liberally to your lips throughout the day.

Medical Microdermabrasion Enhanced is a mechanical and chemical 3 step exfoliation treatment. The skin renews about every 28 days and when we age the process slows down and dead skin cells can build up giving a dull look to the skin. The 3 step exfoliation of the medical microdermabrasion enhanced can speed up the cell turnover for healthier, younger looking skin. The procedure is performed by Kansas City skin care specialist Keri Eichhorn.
While this is more of a medical style treatment, it is performed with your comfort in mind. With some dimmed lights and soft music in the medical spa of Lee's Summit's Summit Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, the procedure starts with a relaxing cleansing and pre-exfoliation process with steam, this is then followed by the microdermabrasion, which is done with the Precision Diamond Peel microdermabrasion machine. Following this part of the procedure there is a low grade chemical peel done, this will range in strength and how long it is applied, depending on the number of treatments already done and the specific skin. There is then an Oxymist treatment done on the skin, followed by the appropriate masque, moisturizer and sunblock. Free mineral makeup make-over is optional- allow an addition 15-20 minutes.

Dr. Chhatre works with three injectable fillers. These fillers are:

Restylane
Perlane
Radiesse

Restylane and Perlane are hyaluronic acid-based fillers, while Radiesse is composed of calcium microspheres suspended in a gel. All are very safe, with little or no occurrence of allergic reactions or side effects.

Before, After and During Permanent Makeup

If you have decided that having permanent makeup with Kansas City skin care specialist Keri Eichhorn, seems to be something that you're interested in, there are just a few things to know to do before and after your procedure to insure you get the best results. To avoid excessive bleeding and scabbing you should stop taking any blood thinners for about one week before your treatment. This will help with the final result. Avoiding smoking, caffeine, and having the treatment while on your menstrual cycle will help decrease the amount of pain you will have during the treatment.

During the application process a topical anesthetic will be applied for approximately 30 minutes to the area being treated. Once the numbing process is completed the treatment will then begin. The first pass may be a little uncomfortable, however, once the first pass is complete there will be a 2nd topical anesthetic applied to penetrate into the skin to help with the numbness. The actual permanent makeup process will only take between 20-30 minutes per area.

After the permanent makeup procedure there can be moderate swelling in the treated areas. Applying cotton soaked in ice water is recommended to help with swelling as well as sleeping with the head elevated. You will be given a topical antibiotic ointment to use following the procedure for approximately 7 days. The swelling usually subsides around 3-5 days and the scabbing usually flakes around 7 days. The color usually looks much darker right after the treatment than it will once it heals. Three applications are required each 4 weeks apart.

Applying eyeliner and drawing eyebrows on everyday, as well as touching them up throughout the day can be quite a hassle. If this is something you are tired of doing or if you have a very active lifestyle where wearing makeup just isn't possible, or have allergies to makeup, permanent makeup may be the right procedure for you.

Through a series of 3 applications, done approximately 4 weeks apart, Licensed Esthetician Keri Eichhorn, will implant the color of your choice for your eyeliner and/or eyebrows. Keri has a background in makeup as well and can help you pick the perfect eyebrow color for your skin. Each appointment takes around 60-90minutes. A consultation is needed to decide on colors and to also do a test spot to check for any allergies.

The pigments that Keri uses at Summit Plastic Surgery & MedSpa are all Iron Oxide free, which helps keep the pigment from fading and also makes these pigments MRI safe. These permanent makeup pigments also won't fade for up to 7-10 years.

After care for Eyelash Extensions

After you get your Novalash Eyelash Extensions the after care is quite easy. There are just a few after care instructions that should be followed. Following these instructions will help the life of your Eyelash Extensions between fills. Fills should be done every 4-5 weeks to avoid needing a new full set.

Following the application of Eyelash Extensions the extensions should not be exposed to water for a 12-24 hour period. When washing the face becareful as not to splash water or cleanser in the eye area. There should be no swimming, hot tubs or steam rooms for the first 12-24 hours. Getting the lashes wet will break down the bonding of the adhesive causing the lashes to fall off sooner. After the first 12-24 hours there is no harm in getting them wet or swimming, hot tubs or steam rooms.

There are some things that cannot be done at all while the lashes are on. Avoid applying any moisturizers, eye creams or eye makeup removers to the lashes. Any cosmetic product that contains glycol, organic solvents, urea or high concentrations of alcohol should be avoided. These products can breakdown the adhesive bond, shortening the duration of the lashes. Rubbing the eyes and eyelash curlers should also be avoided.

There is an approved NovaLash mascara that is safe to use on the lashes that will not break down the bonding of the adhesive. Waterproof mascara should not be used. Repeated use of even approved mascara may shorten the lifespan of the Eyelash Extensions.

How is Abdominoplasty Performed?

Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that produces dramatic changes to the profile and look of your abdominal area. Many people consider a tummy tuck to redefine the abdomen after multiple pregnancies or massive weight loss. Either of these experiences can leave behind stretched skin that has lost its elasticity, and abdominal muscles that have lost tone due to excessive expansion.

The tummy tuck procedure generally involves an incision from one hipbone to the other. Excess fat is removed, as well as excess skin. The navel must be repositioned, as well, so Dr. Chhatre makes an incision around it to separate it from the abdominal wall, then resets it in the proper place after the rest of the abdomen is restructured.

How is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction has become a very commonly performed procedure, much in demand for those wishing to get rid of stubborn fat deposits to refine their body contours. Increased frequency of the procedure and advances in how it's performed, have made it extremely safe and effective.

Liposuction is performed by inserting a stainless steel tube, or cannula, into small incisions in the target areas. Fat is then suctioned out using a powerful vacuum. In tumescent liposuction—the preferred procedure for most cosmetic surgeons—Dr. Chhatre injects local anesthesia into the fat deposits, which causes them to swell, or become tumescent. This makes it easier for the fat to be removed, and reduces the amount of blood and fluid lost during the procedure. In addition, the anesthetic makes the procedure pain-free. Using local anesthetic rather than general anesthetic also greatly reduces the risk of complications from the procedure.

For the best results from liposuction, be sure to work with a board certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience with liposuction. Advantages of Submuscular (under the muscle) Implants

When considering breast augmentation, one important decision is where the implant is to be placed. In general, implants can be positioned either on top of the pectoral muscle (subglandular), or beneath it (submuscular).

Submuscular implants provide many advantages over implants placed beneath the breast tissue. Dr. Chhatre prefers submuscular implants because:

There is less risk of capsular contracture. Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue that forms around the implant becomes unnaturally tight. It can cause an unnatural appearance to the breast, and can also be very painful, and may have to be corrected through additional surgery.

Submuscular implants create less interference with future mammograms. Because the implant sits beneath the chest muscle, it interferes less with the ability to examine the glandular tissue of the breast.

Submuscular implants are less visible. Because they're covered by the chest muscle, the edges of the implants won't show. There's also less chance of visible rippling. Submuscular implants also have a more natural feel.

Submuscular implants tend to work better for women with small breasts and also in women who are thin. If you have small breasts to begin with, subglandular implants can be more visible because there is less breast tissue to cover the implant. With a submuscular implant, the muscle covers the implant, giving a more natural appearance to the breast.

Breast Augmentation and Mammograms

Breast cancer is a concern for all women, and having yearly mammograms according to your doctor's guidelines is a powerful tool in early detection. But what effect does breast augmentation have on mammograms? Can augmentation compromise early cancer detection?

The percentage of cancers detected in early stages is roughly the same in women with and without breast implants. This evidence suggests that the presence of breast implants does not affect early detection of breast cancer. Implants can, however, make mammograms a bit more problematic.

Implants can actually make manual detection of irregularities in the breast tissue easier because of the way the implants change the contours of the breast. With mammography, though, the implants can present a challenge in getting clear pictures. You might have to have additional films taken during your mammogram to be sure all the breast tissue is adequately examined. If you have silicone implants, doctors often recommend regular MRIs, both for better views of the tissue and to monitor the condition of your implants.

A submuscular implant causes less disruption to mammography because, being placed beneath the chest muscle, it doesn't disrupt the breast tissue. If you have implants, be sure the technician doing your mammography knows ahead of time. You're likely to get much better results from your mammogram if you work with a technician who has experience working with implants.
