Saline Implants ro Silicone Implants?
It has now been nearly four years since the FDA approval of silicone breast implants for cosmetic breast augmentation. Dr. Chhatre at Summit Plastic Surgery & MedSpa is now doing an enormous number of breast augmentation surgery with silicone implants. This type of implant offers some fantastic benefits and the potential for remarkable results.
After more than ten years of controversy and scientific studies, the United States Food and Drug Administration(FDA) have approved silicone gel breast implants for general use. They are now available to all women ages 22 and higher for both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery.
The availability of silicone implants will greatly expand the options for women seeking cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery. In many situations, silicone implants have real advantages over saline breast implants. They are lighter than saline implants and they are less prone to rippling or crinkling which can sometimes be felt and occasionally become visible under the skin. In skinny and thin patients, with small breasts, silicone implants do a great job. However, they are thought by some to have a higher rate of capsular contracture, which is scarring around the implants, although the research has not proved this.
In countries where both saline and silicone implants have been available, the vast majority of patients and surgeons choose silicone implants. This is testimony to their advantages. In the US, we are likely to see, in the future, a large number of women select silicone breast implants. However, there will still be a place for saline implants. Some women might simply prefer not to have silicone implants for personal reasons as well as the cost for silicone is more expensive. Silicone implants have not been shown to cause autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus as had been feared.
At Summit Plastic Surgery and MedSpa, Kansas City Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Matt Chhatre is already doing a large number of breast augmentation surgeries with silicone implants. For more information or to schedule a consultation for breast augmentation surgery please contact our office.
